Girasole Trattoria is the latest culinary venture from longtime friend Johan Halsberghe, the Belgian chef who has already introduced us (and New York) to his Mojo Mousse Bar, the Brazilian restaurant and cocktail spot Bar Goyana (reflecting his Brazilian wife Jaqueline’s heritage) and Cafe D’Anvers (in honor of his birthplace, Antwerp) … all located side by side on one block of the Upper East Side. In a fortuitous turn, this new Italian venue is strengthened by the addition of the head cook from Lexington Pizza, where the Chantepleure hosted two events before their recent closure. What better way to introduce the versatility of Loire wines than through the kitchen of a chef who is equally at home presenting Belgian, Brazilian, and French classics, the evening will feature a traditionally structured, four course “Cena” (Italian, “dinner”), paired with wines from four appellations that best reveal the unique characteristics of their cépages (grape varietals).
